The Iliad & The Ironman

By on June 8, 2012

It’s hard to believe that not even one year ago I started my “Couch to Ironman 140.6” journey. I wanted to complete a 5k, 10k, 13.1, 26.2, 70.3,  100 mile Century ride, and finally the IM 140.6 within one year. Everything on that list has been checked off except ONE, Ironman 140.6. It’s fitting that I will return to my home, Louisville, KY, to complete this journey. I have spent so much time in the pool, hitting the roads, and peddling that bike with the vision of my son Boston at the finish line waiting on me, crossing over that IM threshold, and knowing that it really happened, and that in one year I could change my life dramatically. Sometimes while running I will visualize it and get emotional. Sometimes I will visualize it and I’m unknowingly running 2 mins faster per mile than I should be. I feel the finish line calling to me like the mythological Sirens of Homer… I only hope, like Odysseus, I can escape the dark grasp of the six headed monster called “The IRONMAN” and become a true Ironman…
